To the Women Standing Beside the Coaches

Five coaches’ wives sitting together in the bleachers overlooking a high school football field at sunset.

We’re missing a few ladies in this picture, but let me tell you something about these women…

They are the backbone of their families.

This coach’s wife life is not for the faint of heart. It takes sacrifice, grace, patience, selflessness—and, if we’re being real, a whole lot of self-control.

Some of my very best friends are women I met because of the path our husbands chose. Women from different seasons, different schools and different chapters of our lives.

And to this day, we still text each other before games.

We vent to each other.
We cry with each other.
We celebrate with each other.

I think the solidarity comes from one simple fact:

We all get it.

There are parts of this life that are hard to explain to someone who hasn’t lived it. The pressure. The criticism. The uncertainty. The long hours. The sacrifices our families make that most people will never see.

And because we understand those things, these women often become your safe place in a coaching world that can sometimes be very finicky—and, if we’re honest, cruel.

Last season, I watched and cheered alongside this group through every loss.

And you know what?

They never stopped cheering.

They never stopped showing up.

They continued supporting their husbands. They continued loving our players. They continued pouring into their families and our program. They kept doing all of the things that rarely make it onto social media or show up on a scoreboard.

These women pour and pour into other people every single day, and it truly is an honor to know them.

There’s also an unspoken understanding among coaches’ wives when the clock hits zero on Friday night.

Regardless of what that scoreboard says, there is still pride.

Because we know.

We know how much our husbands pour into this mission. We know the hours no one sees. We know the conversations that happen at home. We know how deeply they care about these kids. We know the heart behind the program.

And while the coaches and players may be the ones everyone sees under those Friday night lights, there are families standing right there with them—living the highs and lows of every season.

And there are women quietly holding a whole lot of it together.

To the women standing beside the coaches: I see you.

Keep showing up. Keep cheering. Keep being a safe place for one another.

Because this life is a whole lot better when we don’t have to do it alone.
